Ian Russey - Contemporary Artist

In my work I attempt to give physical forms to abstract concepts. I think of my works not as forms that have been abstracted, but abstractions given form. The forms in my sculptures are generally unlike any found in reality, yet I attempt to imbue them with a sense of uncanny familiarity. While the overall form reads as something entirely abstract, here can be seen a leg, there a wing, elsewhere a geological formation.

My sculptures are skinned with rich textures that denote thematic and sometimes symbolic significance while appealing to the viewer’s sense of touch. I employ a wide array of materials, some standard, some unconventional, in my work. Plaster, ceramic, wood, chicken wire, aluminum foil, bubble wrap, paper and cardboard are some of the many I use. For me, the use of these materials is about texture, surface tension, the way light and shadow play off and interact with different surfaces, as well as with the way different textures and patterns can bring to mind a variety of implications.

My art is an exploration of soul and psyche, and how these immaterial elements interact with the physical world, as well as the clash, contradictions, and gestalt unions that emerge. I am interested in the psychology of spirituality, the way in which the mind wrestles with things too immense and too formless for it to grasp, and with the stresses, anxieties, and compounding uncertainties of the current age.
